体弱多病、孤零无依的林黛玉，投奔到外祖母家——贾府，与表兄贾宝玉一见如故。

在大观园里，宝玉与情趣相投的黛玉心心相印，他俩避开了贵族家庭的约束，偷读《西厢记》，抒发着他们的自由思想，也滋长着他们之间的爱情。

宝玉的父亲望子“成龙”，但宝玉却蔑视功名利禄，反对礼教传统，被黛玉引为知己。贾政无法容忍宝玉的叛逆，借故痛打宝玉。宝玉伤愈，黛玉去访他，恰巧晴雯心中不快，使黛玉尝了“闭门羹”，生成误会。

落花飞雪，黛玉触景伤情，葬花赋词，抒发精神上的压抑。宝玉听到“葬花词”，向她吐露了爱意。

为了贾府的利益，也为了选择具有封建道德典范的薛宝钗为媳，贾母、凤姐等人巧使“调包计”，使黛玉受到严重打击，她在病中焚了诗稿，在封建势力袭击下结束了生命。

黛玉去世之时，正是宝玉洞房之夜，当宝玉识破“调包计”后，便不顾一切地奔去找“林妹妹”。

宝玉在黛玉的灵前放声大哭后，离开那“除了门前的一对石狮子是干净的”之外，充满肮脏腐朽的贾府，这封建的叛逆之子，头
